Loei (Thai เลย) is one of the most sparsely populated provinces (changwat) of Thailand, located in the North-East of Thailand. In the north it borders Xaignabouli and Vientiane Province of Laos.

The province is covered with low mountains, and the capital Loei is located in a fertile basin. The river Loei which flows through the province is a tributary of the Mekong river. This forms the boundary of the province in the north with the neighboring Laos.

While temperatures in the hot season around April can be more than 40 degrees Celsius, the province is the only place in Thailand which regularly goes below 0 degrees in the nights during the cold season around December.

The province has several mountains including Phu Kradung, which is apart of the Phu Kradung National Park.

In 1853 king Mongkut (Rama IV) founded the city of Loei to better administer the increased population in the area. In 1907 the province was created.

The seal of the province shows the stupa (tower) at Phra That Si Song Rak built in 1560. It was built by King Maha Chakrapat of the Ayutthaya kingdom, and King Chai Chetha of Lan Xang, and marked the boundary between the two kingdoms. The provincial tree is the Khasi Pine (Pinus kesiya).

The province is subdivided into 12 districts (Amphoe) and 2 minor districts (King Amphoe). The districts are further subdivided into 89 communes (tambon) and 839 villages (muban).

Loei has some nice national parks and some great motor bike rides. Only problem is it's just so bloody far away. still if you're in Udon already. I'll be posting s short story in the next week about a mad night out I had there in 2002.

According to my Garmin GPS software. Via the fastest route it is 144 KM and should take 1:59:57. I guess it all depends on how many stops you have to make on the way because you over did things on the Som Tam the previous day. biggrin.gif

yeah approx 2 hr from udon relatively easy drive

are you going with a girl.

i dont do many temples but know of a few

tam pa poo temple 10 kms heading to chiang khan

if your with company head out to the huay krating resevoir, you can hire a house boat [thai style] get taken out and eat drink on the water, its about 20 kms on the way to dansai.

'robot' is the biggest club, have coyotees, no freelancers in the technical sense of course anythings possible, a few lbs who will flirt with farang , if you start buying drinks for the coyotees they will flock around you and dance with you
but usually expensive to take out
good bands and shows usually

'time up' smaller place similar to robot but sometimes have rock bands rather than cover bands

2 hotels right next to robot and 400 metre walk to time up, 'AP court' cheaper of the 2 quite ok
many places in that area to eat drink that have live music

was another place 'Q bar' not sure if its open now about a k away from robot

kings hotel is another good hotel, there is a freelancer place across the road 'Can Can' and Q bar is close
the guys working at kings hotel will get you company delivered, normal prices.

a few st places, pretty rough and ready, not easy to find except one one the main rd to wang saphung, but i've never seen anything nice in there, the other place is very hard to find but has nicer selection.

theres a few more hotels and plenty of places to eat of course

i know a few farang and thais there if you need anything specific
