Dont want to try and preach but using unsecured wireless in a public place is like playing russian roulette.

It is a simple task for someone to sit near you and use what is called the man in the middle technique to get your machine to connect to the hotspot via his machine all the while logging your keystrokes.

So simple rules of not accessing bank details or in fact anything where you must type in a password should be applied.

Unsecured wireless networks are used by criminals as what we call honeypots to attract the unwary user and steal information from thier machine.

I make my living securing wireless LAN's and can tell you it's not an urban legend, your computer can be as valuable as your atm card and pin number to someone who knows how to use the information.
