Forum Upgrade March 2017 - Hints, Tips and Complaints   19/03/17

The forum is not down - just running very slowly due to the task of reindexing the millions of posts in the database due to an upgrade of the server software. Unfortunately it is difficult to predict how long this will take to complete so all BM's are implored to be patient. You can all help to speed this process by refraining from posting pointless stuff and please avoid uploading photos till it is finished.    Sometimes users are experiencing very slow page reads or error pages and this is caused by server load.    Please note that many of the old features are not available atm but this because they cannot be reinstated until the reindex is complete - so don't be too concerned about missing bits as yet. However .... please note any issues outside of this to this thread here where the Site Admins can then work out what needs to be reinstated when possible.   Current Progress as of 8pm Bangkok time 20 March 2017     Current Progress as of 2:30pm Bangkok time 21 March 2017     Current Progress as of 1:00pm Bangkok time 22 March 2017     Thank you for your patience and hopefully we can provide updates on progress

  1. There is no comprehensive list. Baboona Beachfront was named as one of the businesses affected. Thread running on this subject here. Cheers Perthie
  2. Couple of quick comments, having stayed in both the Renaissance and the Metropole in 2016. LK Group has gone rather a bit downhill, and from being a prestigious accommodation provider has slipped quite badly. They don't put the effort and funds into maintenance and repairs these days, and my view of the two LK's that I have used recently is they are quite shabby and overpriced. Be thinking filthy mouldy bathrooms, broken fitments in the rooms, bodgy repair work all round, this in the one bedroom suites. Proximity to LK Metro was the only saving grace for me, but I won't return to booking with the LK Group again in the future. The Empress should be in a better state as it's a newer building. Personally I think the rates there are exorbitant, but you pay for the proximity to the beach (even if you can't see it from your room....). The location of the Empress shouldn't be an issue, most parts of town are only a few minutes away by moto-sai or baht-bus. If the overall state of the hotel isn't a factor and you want to be around the LK Metro area, then the Metropole is liveable if not quite as grand as it used to be. Certainly the cheaper rooms there are quite well priced for the location. I just object to being charged premium prices for a 2 star room. Cheers Perthie
  3. Quick Google throws up a similar complaint from a while back. In that case, the person e-mailed Agoda to say they were not willing to provide copies of their card etc, and Agoda cancelled their booking. Looks like you triggered an alert in their system, and they'll stop all future bookings through Agoda until you verify that you are indeed you. Use another online booking agency if you don't feel safe sending the info' they require. Cheers Perthie
  4. You have multiple threads up now pushing this issue, of which this one will be allowed to run for the time being. Cheers Perthie
  5. I've booked 9 months out from a trip, and I just booked 4 weeks out from my next tour. We're not the only people making bookings, as there are ordinary tourists who make long-range plans for a much anticipated foreign holiday. Mongers with a preference for a specific hotel (etc) will also book well in advance rather than risk not getting their favourite spot to stay in. You also have sites like Agoda, which as I understand it place a hold on a certain number of rooms each month which they expect to sell exclusively to their own customers for a markup. Just because Agoda says "there are only 3 of these rooms left" at a hotel doesn't actually mean the place is nearly booked out to everyone else. Popular hotels and economically priced rooms will always be the first to go, as they fit the location/budget needs of the bulk of travellers. More expensive rooms would tend to book out more slowly as the market, especially in a place like Pattaya, tends not to be looking for an expensive trip overall. Time of year will also factor in. Low Season in Pattaya is still relatively busy with lots of folks taking advantage of the cheaper rates, but most larger hotels are very unlikely to be booked out. Peak periods like Christmas etc cause a surge of bookings and rapidly only the most expensive rooms in town will be left available. Anyway, who doesn't like that feeling of having flights and room booked way in advance? It adds anticipation to the daily grind whilst we wait for travel time to come around. Cheers Perthie
  6. Sorry mate, Brexit is such a big issue that it's one of those subjects that proliferates multiple threads across the Forum and becomes unmanageable. Accordingly, we've limited discussion to two threads pinned in Barstool banter and any new threads we find are being closed down. The financial thread is here. Cheers Perthie
  7. Does your laptop have a mounting point for a security cable? I take a normal size laptop every trip, and secure it with the cable. It would be a big enough deterrent for most thieves, and even a PacSafe security bag needs to be secured to something to be effective - same same. Cheers Perthie
  8. Guys, the Brexit issue is obviously going to be an ongoing concern for just about everyone for an unforeseeable amount of time, and we certainly don't want to stifle the discussion. However, the number of threads about Brexit are growing which makes things somewhat unmanageable from a Forum perspective. There are now 2 pinned topics in Barstool which have been specially created to cover the Political and Financial ramifications post-Brexit. Post-Brexit - Political Discussions Post Brexit - Financial Discussions Could you please direct all discussions to the relevant newly created Topics. All current Brexit threads are now being closed, and any new threads that pop up will be redirected. Cheers Perthie

  12. I realise it's Thailand and some things are done in a bodgy fashion, but generally when there's a transfer of ownership of a business there are adjustments to the final price of sale for paid accounts. I fail to see what the new owner gains out of this. If they kick out all their paid guests, then the hotel is empty and producing no income until new bookings arrive, many of whom will also have paid the previous owner.. I'd be agreeing with what boob_kook posted above, put some pressure back on and demand either a full refund or honouring your booking. Sounds like the new owner is up to something and trying to play fast and loose with standing bookings for some reason. Cheers Perthie
  13. Can I point out that the firm renting out their scooters has clearly stated that they cannot obtain comprehensive insurance for hirers, and in that case the same applies to every other firm renting out scooters in Thailand. Having established that, continuing to post critical comments is of no value and is simply fecking with the thread and with someone's business. Tidied up a few comments, cease and desist please. 14. Stayed in the past. Versace Suites look extremely fancy and are certainly spacious, but TBH the brocade is just a veneer on their ordinary suites for which you pay a premium. Visually splendid though. Balconies are tiny but adequate for those of us who 'have' to smoke, service staff are as described above the usual LK disinterested frumps. As with most hotels you'll notice poor quality finishes in the rooms where wear and tear has been patched over, and in my case the spa was clogged and wouldn't drain so I had a tub full of water in my bathroom for more than a day. The pool area is really nice and gets shade in the afternoon which is good for the TG's. Convenience store right next door. Easy baht-bus ride both directions on Soi Buakhao. I would stay again, as the location was good for me and the girl loved the room. Cheers Perthie
