Forum Upgrade March 2017 - Hints, Tips and Complaints   19/03/17

The forum is now up again and running after the upgrade - there is still the task of searching for updated versions of apps and plugins from the old version and then download, upgrade and configure    Please note any issues outside of this to this thread here where the Site Admins can then work out what needs to be reinstated when possible.         Thank you for your patience and hopefully we can provide updates on progress

  1. No I was no wrong!! I said that it had become more difficult than in recent times unless you had a longer term visa and then there is no real difference. In the past there was no need for a residency certificate, you just went into the bank with some money, your hotel business card for use as your address and within a short while you were walking out with your new bank account set up and probably an ATM card. Also you will see if you read the main topic on setting up a bank account in Thailand (link below) that many people have had to take out mandatory insurance and that some have had more difficulties than others in getting a residency certificate. You will also see in the link below that opening a bank account in Thailand can be a like a lottery, someone else can do exactly what another member has recommended and be turned down and then another can just be lucky and set up a bank account with no dramas. In the past it was all very easy...........
  2. There is a big thread on opening a bank account in Thailand and how much more difficult it has become in recent times unless you have a longer term visa. I would put a link but the search function is running a bit slow at present due to the upgrade. In short it is a case of trying a number of bank and you may find one that will let you open an accounts, but it appears that even within branches it depends on the person you get. However try the search function on banks when it comes back and it gives some help as to how to increase your chances of opening a bank account!
  3. Yes, I liked the hotel too, but the last time I also found the bed to be as hard as rock and had difficulty sleeping and didn't encounter that on previous visits. I also found that the wear and tear was starting to show and it needed at a minimum a 'lick of paint' and yes the TV's are vintage. If it had a refurb, I too would seriously consider returning to stay there!
  4. Although the address sounds like Soi Chaiypoon (164/ 7 9,, Soi Chaiyaphon Withi 7), I believe it is at the start of Soi 7, (just off 2nd Road) very busy (and noisy) area, but seems to get reasonable reviews on Tripadvisor and other ICheck Inn's I have stayed in have been ok.
  5. There is a very good reason the Sawasdee Hotels are cheap and the reason is that practically nothing is spent on maintenance. Have stayed in Sawasdee Siam years ago and would never stay there after the swimming pool went a dark shade of green and eventually had to be closed for a week. I would say the chance of good wi-fi would be pretty slim as if it was it would be the only thing that would be good other than the low price! I think if you do a search on Sawasdee Hotels on the forum you will find that these comments will be one of the more flattering ones! http://www.pattaya-addicts.com/forum/topic/283562-sawasdee-sabai/?hl=sawasdee
  6. Their pool is not very big, especially when compared to Areca's pools. I also think it might be closed off "out of operating hours" which is very easy to do as it is a roof-top pool which can be easily closed off. I think the Areca is the better option and I have seen people swimming at what I would consider early, although I cannot comment at 6.30am as I am not usually looking at the pool!
  7. It is just as well we all have different opinions as we would all want to stay in the same hotel!!!! I much prefer Areca to Metropole, didn't rate the breakfast at all in Metropole, the pool is more of a plunge pool than a swimming pool and don't like the 'old fashioned' look of the rooms. I have also found it usually to be marginally dearer than Areca.
  8. There is a very good reason that Sutus Court 5 is the cheapest of the Sutus blocks, they are all part of the complex, I believe that no 5 is the oldest and most decrepit! I have only stayed in Sutus Court 1 and that is ok, I looked into some of the other rooms in other blocks and I would only stay in No 1!
  9. Or putting it another way, her permanent residency gives her the right to permanently live in Australia, however with permanent residency you have to have a visa to enter and leave Australia. This is usually given for five years, so she could re-appear the day before the visa expires and stay as long as she like, however if she decided to leave the Australia again within two years she may not get a visa to re-enter. Once she has stayed for 2 years in a 5 year period, she can apply for another 5 year entry and exit visa. "If you have lived in Australia for at least two years of the past five years and are granted a Subclass 155 Resident Return visa it will have a five year travel facility from date of grant." So it would seem that as she has already spent two years living in Australia, she could rock up on the last day of the visa, spend a few months in Australia and be entitled to another five year entry and exit visa! There is no cost for a visa for her to come to Australia now as she already has a visa!
  10. I actually prefer the Corona Wing, the rooms are newer and nicer in Evergreen but I like the view from the Corona pool side rooms better. Rooms size is a little smaller but not much and have more or less the same facilities,TV, tea/coffee, hair dryer (if I had enough hair!). The furniture in both is pretty similar. The corridors are darker as there are rooms on both sides of the corridor and no natural light which can make them a bit dingy looking! When available I take the Corona Wing over the Evergreen Wing, but go for a room from floor 3 up as they have bigger rooms and smaller balconies! I have stayed in the original Areca wing too but still prefer the Corona.
  11. I really liked this hotel, my only slight gripe is that it is a little bit of a walk to the Evergreen Wing - next time I might try the Corona Wing (room with pool view)...anyone care to share their experiences about the Corona Wing? All in all, a really good hotel - I shall certainly return. I actually prefer the Corona Wing, the rooms are newer and nicer in Evergreen but I like the view from the Corona pool side rooms better. 12. Ok, so you didn't like it, does that mean nobody else is entitled to have another opinion? A look at most hotels on Trip Advisor will have a variety of views and in this case my view of the hotel is entirely different to you and I also am apparently at the top of one of Trip Advisor lists which I do't attach much credit to. I like their breakfasts, think their TV's are fine and have been in a room when they changed the refrigerator to a brand new one! I have always found the beds comfortable,I like the location, love lounging around the pools in the afternoons and will be going back there later in the year. Could improvements be made, of course there could, personally would prefer a shower to a shower/bath and sometimes the wi-fi has not been 100%, but any time I reported it, someone came up from reception to sort the issue. I have stayed at other hotels in Pattaya including some in the LK group including the LK Metro which other members like but I personally don't like, but hey they are entitled to their opinion. If we all loved the same hotel it would get a bit packed!
  13. Haven't stayed at Blue Sky but have stayed at Sutus Court and Nature View and much preferred Nature View. The pool area is much nicer too!
