I have a retirement visa but my pal came out on no visa entry, got the one week extension at Jomtien immigration and should have left on June 15th. I have told him it is not a good idea but don't know the consequences enough to tell him the real bottom line on him overstaying.

Anyone know anything about what trouble he will be in let me know.

cheers guys

I think he will have to pay 500 bahts daily if he had no visa permit... He should go to cambodia for a couple hours ASAP or to immigration office to extend the visa stay... The more days he stays, the more fines he will pay.... 500 x 8 days he already stays 4000 bahts is a lot of money... Tell him ASAP....

Its very unlikely, but CAN happen that he gets stopped for some trivial offence, and, should Immigration be involved, its a trip to the monkeyhouse and deportation
And yes it IS 500 Baht per day, so i would tell him to get a shake on and get it sorted
Quite why he never took advantage of the free tourist visa offer is beyond me tbh (now extended til 2010 i hear)

Yeah, I was just reading about it today. When he leaves the country, he will be fined. If he gets caught in the country, he will be fined, deported and banned from re-entry. Although I don't know how long the ban lasts.

Good call Hedonist. This from the Thai Consulate in Chicago:

"All foreigners who apply for Tourist Visa at the Royal Thai Embassies and the Royal Thai Consulates-General world wide, including eligible foreigners who apply for Visa on Arrival at designated checkpoints, will be exempted from Tourist Visa fee from June 25, 2009 to March 4, 2010. Such arrangement is for Tourist Visa only."

If caught in country he would be fined and deportedbut NOT banned.

I know someone who got deported for overstay and flew straight back to Thailand the following day!!

500Baht a day and it is capped at 20,000 so after 40 days it does not increase.

BUT

If you are caught without a Visa, there is a chance that you will do time in The Monkey House until they buy you a very expensive ticket home.

The Thai Government charge your own government for the ticket home and then your government chase you for the money. The tickets are charged at "Walk-on" rate

You will only go to the monkey house if you can't pay the fine the judge imposes. You the work of your sentence at 200 baht a day, most over-stayers with no cash spend 7 days in the monkey house. You will then be taken to I.D.C,and will be deported, once you have the cash for a flight out of the country. You are normally made to go back to the country where your passport was issued. If you can't get the cash for a flight and you embassy does not help, you could spend years in I.D.C.
