I don't think I have every seen a thread that asks if anyone has been asked to show an exit ticket on arrival in Thailand. Note that there is a question about arriving without a visa and with a visa.

I have never been asked even when ariving without a visa but now I always have a visa.

In regard to your questions:
In regard to air ticket for leaving Thailand, it is now the responsibility of the airlines that take you into Thailand that are suppose to check you have a departing ticket
Australians get a 28 day visa on arrival automatically free

I hope this helps

It has always been that way but I purposely avoided confusing things by introducing that side of it.

Also it is 30 days and it is not a visa. The 30 days are given under a visa waiver program.

I travel in/out of Thailand several times a year (10 - 20 times).  In recent memory (past +5 years maybe), I've never been asked by Thai Immigration to show an outbound ticket.  I usually come into Thailand with no visa (30 day stamp).

I never understood the logic behind the airline's criteria for deciding if you should have an exit ticket from Thailand.  The countries of Australia, America, and New Zealand are the worst.  If you have a Thai visa, they don't need to see a ticket for an outbound flight.  If no Thai visa, you need to have a ticket for an outbound flight.  If I cannot afford to purchase a ticket within 30 days (no visa), what makes them think I'll be able to afford a ticket after spending 60 days (tourist visa) here?  Luckily most of my travel is within Asia.  Other than Singapore one time that I can recall, most Asian countries do not seem to be a problem.

I’ve never been asked to show exit ticket by Thai immigration.

VISA EXEMPTION.

A program from the Thai Government which allows citizens of specific countries to travel to the Kingdom of Thailand for tourism for period from 15 up to 30 days (depending of the country of origin) without having to obtain a visa.
Visa Exemption  is another name for what is really a  VISA WAIVER PROGRAM.

A VISA
is a certificate issued or a stamp marked on the applicant’s passport by Thai competent authorities to indicate that the applicant’s credentials have been verified and he or she has been granted permission to enter the country for a temporary stay.
(from 60 days up to    )
