  18. I was in Pattaya the first two weeks of 2012. I stayed in a Canterbury Tales Cafe room my entire stay. Pros: 1.English breakfast is good. 2.You can smoke at the outside tables. 3.All the staff are really nice. 4.The cafe is also a bookstore. I didn't have to look hard for copies of standard first trip books, ie Private Dancer. 5.Rooms are spacious. Most of the rooms have balconies. 6.Felt comfortable just hanging out here. Not too big, nor too small of an establishment. 7. Accomodating. I showed up without a reservation, and after a little checking, got a room. 8.Dave , the owner, is a nice guy. BTW, Dave, has my cavair come in yet? 9. It seems like a tolerant place. There's an article pasted on the cafe's bathroom wall about gay rights, and alot of other articles, posters about different things,too.. I also took a ladyboy back to my room without a second thought. 10. It's a pretty secure place. After 8pm, the cafe closes, and you have to use a backdoor that requires a key. I stayed in the main building though. Don't know about the other buildings. 11.Rooms are cleaned every other day, thoroughly. They also have safes. I never had any thought of the staff stealing anything, or anything like that. 12. They'll do your laundry. Just hand it in, get back next day. 13. I think I had the nicest room, #15, most of the time, for 700baht/night (high season). Cons: Just a couple little things. 1.They don't have jam (just marmalade) with the breakfast. 2.There's nothing on the menu that's American food. Place across the street serves burgers, though. 3. The bar next door is kind of annoying. Plays music way too loud. Once in my room, it wasn't bad though. Lots of good stuff, and just a couple small things that are acceptable. I will probably stay here again in the future. Rating 9/10 Steve
  19. I have just got back from a short stay in the Irish Rovers guesthouse on LK Metro. Although it is quite well known on this forum, it doesn't seem to have a review thread, so I thought I would write a few words. First of all, it is one of the very few Pattaya guesthouses that can be booked through Agoda. If you like the convenience of pre-paying your bill and being able to instantly see availability, then this is a very big plus. I tend to travel at short notice, and hate to have to wait for people to get back in touch by e-mail (if the first couple of places I try are fully booked, and each one takes a day to reply - then it can take several days to actually make a booking). This is a small guesthouse over a small sports bar in LK Metro. It is certainly a clean, professionally run and secure establishment. Their standard rooms are small and very basic - far too small for my liking. The superior rooms are very different, though. They are as comfortable as many far more expensive hotels that I have stayed in, and have a balcony looking out over LK Metro itself. There is a decent amount of storage space, and the bathrooms are basic but quite large. There is no tub - the entire room effectively being a shower cubicle, and the only toiletries provided is a tiny bar of soap (although that is fairly standard for budget hotels and guesthouses). There is fast, reliable and free wifi - both in the bar and in the rooms. Although I didn't spend a lot of time in it, the bar seemed very nice, with a laid back atmosphere and western food. It has big TVs showing various sports and darts and pool facilities. They organise golf and football, as well as bar crawls and other outings. The staff are great. The manager is a nice guy who runs an efficient operation, the girls in the bar are a friendly and helpful bunch and the cleaners are wonderfully efficient. Generally every time I went out, the room was sparkling clean when I came back and one time when I was only out for about 10 minutes, the cleaning girl sheepishly came up to me and apologised for not having cleaned it yet! I arrived at nearly 1am, and there was a mix-up with rooms (I had booked a superior, but all that was available was a standard). This is the sort of mistake that could happen to anyone, and it was fixed quickly. I did have to spend that first night in the small room, but I was moved to the much nicer superior room the following morning. This does mean that I got to experience both types of rooms, though. There are a few downsides. There is no getting away from the fact that there is some noise - both from the street and from the bar. Actually, it wasn't as bad as I expected and didn't bother me in the slightest, but it would bother very light sleepers. However, if street noise bothers you then you probably don't want to be staying on LK Metro! The room safes aren't very secure - they are the very common sort that can, famously, be opened with a potato! That said, the bar is open 24 hours, so there are always staff on duty - so I was never particularly worried about security. The air conditioning worked well (rather too well, actually, it could make the rooms very cold!) but it was very noisy. I don't like having air conditioning on all night, much preferring ceiling fans - after a quick aircon blast to cool the room down. Oddly enough there was a fan in the smaller "standard" room, but not in the larger "superior" one. That meant, in the superior room the only options were to have the noisy aircon on all night, to open the windows (although, with the noise outside that would be a very loud option) or to get very hot. As is the case with almost all guest houses and very small hotels, you should be aware that the rooms are up several flights of stairs - so if you have problems climbing stairs then you should probably stick to bigger hotels. However, these are minor gripes in what was generally a very positive experience. In short, I was very happy with my stay here. It certainly does represent outstanding value for money (the rooms currently being 500-800 baht, depending upon the room and time of year). I certainly recommend the superior rooms, and hope to stay there again in future. I wouldn't personally like to stay in the standard rooms (they were OK for that first night, but I was very glad to get into the much nicer superior room). However, if you aren't bothered by a tiny and very basic room then these might suit you.

    Billabong Hotel

Founded 3 years ago, the Billabong Hotel is located on the inside bend of Soi LK Metro. The area is a popular one for newbies and veterans alike due to the constant improvement the area is undergoing. There are many restaurants nearby, a ton of beer bars, Mike's Shopping Mall, and a slew of agogos that include M.A.S.H., Champagne, Submarine, The Office, and Oasis, among others. Getting around from here is easy. The hotel offers an airport taxi is available for 800 THB. Once in town, there are a lot of motorbike taxis, as well as two baht bus routes, all within walking distance. If you prefer to have your won means on transportation, the hotel rents motorbikes, and cars/trucks are for rent at various nearby businesses. The bar is well-stocked, and if you're a guest at the hotel, you'll enjoy a 10% discount on your bin. The prices are competitive, with draft beer starting at 55 THB and mixed drinks starting at 60 THB. They also have various drink specials on a daily basis. If you've stayed there for any length of time before, then you may have noticed the nice parties they throw on occasion as well, complete with catered food. In addition to the above, the bar is open 24 hours a day, which is terrific. There's nothing quite like being able to relax at the bar prior to heading up to the room no matter how late you arrive back from a night of partying. And since the bar is open 24 hours a day, that means they have hotel reception 24 hours a day as well. This is good for those arriving on late flights from your home countries. It's a girl-friendly hotel, which means no joiner fees, and the receptionist will keep the identification card of the guest you take up to your room. Speaking of room guests, the hotel employes approximately 25 girls, who work between 3:30pm and 3am. Bar fines start at 350 THB. The bar has various live band shows, which mostly take place on Sundays. Aside from that, there are 2 LCD televisions, free pool, and plenty of seating in the form of couches, chairs, and barstools. The open air bar gets a nice breeze, and has plenty of fans positioned throughout to help on those really hot days. Food is served as well, with dishes ranging from both western and Thai. An all-day 100 THB breakfast is one of the many to get a bite to eat there. As for the hotel itself, it's got 16 rooms spread out over 4 floors. Check-in and check-out times are 12:00pm, and you can pay by cash or credit card. There are 3 types of rooms, and prices start at 650 THB per day, with various monthly discounts for those who stay for long periods of time. For the security conscious, you'll be glad to know there's CCTV cameras, and room safes. Each room includes air conditioning, cable television, dvd player, ceiling fan, closet, Thai-style bathroom, seating, nightstand, desk, and a refrigerator (with minibar). All the rooms are smoking, but feel free not to smoke if you don't want to. Most rooms have a balcony, which offers nice views of the soi below. Website: www.billabonghotel.com Email: bookings@billabonghotel.com. Phone: +66 844 640432 Have you visited or stayed at Billabong Hotel before? If so, please reply to this post about your experience there in an effort to keep your fellow mongers well informed.

    Sapphire Lodge

Located on Pratnumak Soi 4, Sapphire Lodge is a new hotel and bar which is bound to please considering it’s part of the Sapphire Group (accompanied by Sapphire Agogo on Soi 15 off Walking Street). From the Pratnumak intersection, turn onto Soi 4 and you’ll find it 600 meters down the road on the right. For those with their own transportation, there’s plenty of parking for both motorbikes and cars/trucks. If it’s a baht bus you’re looking for, the closest pick-up is across the soi at the Asia Pattaya Hotel. For those who live dangerously, a motorbike taxi will average 60 THB from the Walking Street area to the Lodge or vice versa. The Lodge isn’t the only reason to head up the hill for a day. There’s an exquisite beach just 100 meters away at the end of the soi. Other nearby attractions include a water park and Exotica Gentleman’s Club. Convenience stores are nearby, and there’s a reputable tailor right next door for those who like to dress to impress. If it’s the hotel you’re interested in, all the rooms are similar and run 700 THB. For that price you get access to the pool (open 8am – 7pm), cable television, free Wi-Fi, closet, bathroom with hot water, refrigerator, desk, king sized bed, two nightstands, chairs, and a wall safe. And, if you'd like to add an extra *item* in your room, there's no reason to worry about joiner fees with this hotel. On the walkway of each floor there are nice seating areas overlooking the pool…nice place to relax prior to starting out your day or ending your evening. There are 4 floors with a total of 16 rooms. View from top floor: Whether you’re staying at the hotel, or just hanging out for the day/night, be sure to sample their food. Menu items include roast chicken, cheeseburgers, club sandwiches, and various Thai dishes. Breakfast is also available, as is room service (9am – 7:30pm). If you’d rather drink than eat, the bar is open from 3 pm until 1am. You have two bars to choose from, one inside and one outside by the pool. The bartenders, doormen, and waitresses are all polite, friendly, and aim to please. You can really tell it's a farang owned and operated business. A 10% discount card is available, and free! The discount cards are valid both here and at Sapphire Agogo (where the weekly Thursday Pattaya-Addicts parties are held). Drink prices start at the following: Bottled Beer – 75 THB Mixed Drinks – 105 THB Bottle Service – 1000 THB Lady Drink – 120 THB Speaking of lady drinks, you’ll be pleased to know there’s a rotation of roughly 40 women who frequent the bar, most of whom are very laid back, making for easy conversation. They pretty much come and go as they please, so when you go you generally notice ones you haven't seen there before. Another plus is they’re far from pushy…up to you as the saying here goes. Have things on your mind other than talking? Bar fines are 400 THB for short time (room included) and 600 THB for long time. I’ve been told there’s no pay-in-advance policy, which I know you all approve of. Quality of the ladies ranges from chubby to hottie. I’ve been known to like the thinner women with pretty faces, of which they certainly have. Photos of the main bar will be forthcoming (this post will be updated at that time). But, I can tell you that it's decorated quite nicely with dim lighting, a great sound system (that's not too loud that you can't carry on a conversation), two large screen televisions, and a ton of comfortable seating in the form of stools with backs on them, extra large chairs, and couches. There's also two floors, the top being horseshoe shaped and overlooking the bottom floor. The top floor is really quite nice for getting to know your lady of choice in a relaxing atmosphere or just hanging out with a lot of fellow mongers. As if I haven’t given you all enough reasons to stay at (or visit) Sapphire Lodge, here’s a few more… Free food daily Every Sunday – Carvery served! There’re also free shots on the above promotion days! So what are you waiting for? Get your tail down to Sapphire Lodge for some tail! Website: http://www.thesapphirelodge.com
