Fairly interested by this kind of pocket translator which is sold on the net between 30 and 200 us$, I wonder if any BM bought it, used it.... I would appreciate any comments especially on the English to Thai. Is it understood by locals.?. Thanks for your feedback.

If you have google translate on your phone use the mic feature and save yourself the money.

They're still quite a few years away from effectively translating romanised to non-romanised languages. If they were that good already all corporate translators would be out of work.

asian syntax and english syntax is too different for a translator to work effectively. Never found a translator that translate properly. Direct word for word translation doesn't work very well.

Make sure you double check the google translate. It doesn’t work very well on long sentences or paragraphs.

Even text translation isn't so good, I can't see voice working very well.  Grammar is just too different.  Compound words of which there are a lot in thai language seem to cause a lot of issues with Google as it translates.  I'm not a really a programmer and certainly not a language expert so goodness knows the technical reasons for this.

I read a little bit of thai, if I need to translate text I don't understand in part I put those words through thai2english.com which outputs the literal translation.  It is easier to interpret this way and pick out the words you don't know.  You can put a whole passage through this site and the literal output is almost always totally different than what Google would tell you.

I know you're asking about voice translation, which I've literally no experience, just saying, if it doesn't work for text, and you add a layer of complication in voice recognition, if anything that's only going to make it worse.

Agree. Simple statements work remarkably well with Google voice translate and probably better than a fixed device which would need some oomph in a little CPU to match Google's servers. What is really shit is Facebook translation, in many languages.

Avoid anything more than one idea per statement.

How are you? is fine.

How are you, I hope the surgery went well and your dog is also better with the rains coming, falls apart.

You can back test a bit by putting the translation in as Thai and see what English pops out.
