Internet of Things - Anyone do that for a job?

Recommended Posts

I got stuck with being the director of IoT for a satellite company. IoT is becoming big, someone here must have a job doing IoT.... anyone?

i could arrange to do IoT in Thailand for the long term if I knew WTF it was.

Heh. I'm a CTO for a company in this space, very deep into the actual engineering.

It's so fantastically awesome that Explorer8939 "gets stuck with being a director of IoT" without even having an idea what it's about. Kinda sums up my view of overseas market/sales people... I guess the TiT factor is also strong, here. ;)

Hello!

We're doing  NB-IoT via satellite.

I am looking at use cases for rural IoT, I am not sure there is a market for it.

What a worthless comment.

i know enough about IoT to know that the number of installed devices will exceed a billion, if not already a billion. I know the various communications systems, and am dimly aware of the various sensor to gateway protocols.

It’s a case where I got the job with no warning on a sink or swim basis. I will likely do the research, and sometime I will be posting about my job in satellite IoT, and you will be claiming it’s all a windup.

Tough crowd here.

Apart from my new day job, I work a date palm ranch, and am looking to install moisture sensors for each date palm in case my watering system fails while I am on the road. So, yeah, I am on the lookout for cheap WiFi sensors.

is that enough back pedaling?

I'll give you some free advice about posting about your new job in  'satellite IoT' ... the majority of people here on this Mongers Forum won't be interested .. I can't think of anything that would be more Off Topic... dates on the otherhand might attract a small group of appreciative readers.

It’s been big for a while, that said it seems like some are only just figuring that out. Those people are now years behind the early adopters.

It's surprising how fast this stuff is rolling out.  I already have five "non-computer" devices in my house that are internet enabled,  and four of them are connected.  I did not specifically select any of these items for IoT capabilities,  it's just getting built into products by default.

In my state, there is a government project on the go to build a "virtual power station" by linking together the storage batteries and solar panels of 50,000 houses.  This will interact with the grid as if it was a 200MW dispatchable power generator.   The whole thing will be monitored and controlled via the IoT capability of the individual units.

One of the biggest issues with the IoT is the amount of data being produced. Today only 0.5% of all available data is analysed and used, and if a person / company doesn’t know how to mine that data effectively then it’s just a waste of time, money and resources.

This sort of thing happens more than you might think.

Before I retired I was a systems analyst,  and it was quite common to be thrown into a task that I knew fuck all about.  It goes with the territory.  You are expected to figure out what is going on and come up with ways to resolve problems and make things work better.

It makes for a lot of stress,  but it can be pretty interesting too.  I met a lot of people who were amazing specialists in their own field, but needed my help with their computer systems.

Basically, I am a systems architect, which means I end up doing systems analysis, which I learned the job as a NASA contractor working in Moscow and Houston. I generally do one thing for a few years, and then abruptly work in a different field.

You haven’t lived until you go through a NASA systems requirements review being the poor bastard who writes the requirements document(s). And my tongue is firmly in my cheek as I write this.

So, now I am in IoT, looking at rural use cases, probably farms, at the low end of the market. Mines and pipelines have satellite connections, so I m looking at users who don’t have access to satellites, or cell towers.

Keep in mind that a lot of IoT devices are monitors, and so only off nominal data is significant. Nobody cares about a burglar alarm until it goes off.

Heh heh.  I think I may have some idea.  I once looked at tendering to do some work for the Australian Navy.  Basically the compliance paperwork was going to add something like 300% to the cost of the real work that would be done.

I decided not to bid on the contract.

I got stuck with having to do the financial reporting for NASA contracts so we got paid. The compliance overhead was staggering.
